Photo-A-Day #448 06/30/06

We picked this frame up in Aruba during our honeymoon. Since we are finishing decorating our room at the Cape this weekend I thought I'd finally print out this picture and put it in the frame. This was from the roll of film that ran through the x-ray twice, thanks security for the grainy photographic memories. It totally fits the frame though, so that is a good thing. I printed a couple more pictures for other frames in the room. I'll be taking pictures of the room once we get everything in place this weekend.

So it is coming up on the 4th or July, that is the official start of the summer in my opinion. So to usher in the Summertime I thought I'd leave it to the Fresh Prince himself. So I changed the video early.

Now I am just waiting for Allison to come home and we will be on our way to the Cape. Do some Rollerblading, work around the house, beach time, kite flying and cook-outing, I'm going to try and make the Nacho Mama's S'mores again. This time on the grill, heat from the bottom may melt things better.

Transformers: The Movie Teaser Trailer

I am very excited aobut this movie, and was excited about the teaser but this was kinda lame, however it did very well as a teaser because it gave away very very little. Transformers Movie - Official Site of Transformers: The Movie

It is hot, and everything is sticky and gross. Envelopes are stuck together and it stinks. I can't wait for some days without humidity.

I played with Taylor out back and caught her in mid catch.

This trailer looks incredible. I can't wait to see the movie next year. Apple - Trailers - Spider-Man 3 - Large

More Zach Braffy goodness on the way. I promise not to watch it get drunk and babble on about the brilliance of the movie and the shirt that he was wearing. (Long story many margaritas ago.)

Photo-A-Day #446 06/28/06

All in all I ended up spending less than 24 hours in Kalamazoo Michigan. This was about the shortest trip I’ve ever taken. I got in to the hotel yesterday around 4 or 5pm, I can’t remember, probably because I went from East Coast Time to Central Time and then back to East Coast Time, I was all over the place. But as I learned, there was a lot to do in Kalamazoo. I could have gone over to Battle Creek to learn more about Kellogg’s cereals. I would have enjoyed that very much. I also could have gone to the Air-Zoo in Kalamazoo. That was a pretty neat place.

I did end up popping into the lobby of the Air-Zoo there for about 15 minutes to check out the gift shop and buy a Kite for Allison and I to use at the Cape. (Also to get the Photo-A-Day.) It is a 3D kite that looks like a fighter jet. I can’t wait to try it out and get some pictures, maybe even some video. We’ll hopefully get to use it this weekend at the Cape. The kite is in a 4 foot tall plastic container and I was lucky to get it on the first leg of the flight home with no problem. They did have quite a selection of balsa wood planes too and I would have picked one up for Andy but I was afraid it wouldn’t survive the trip.

I got to the airport, returned the car, performed my quick change in the bathroom to much more relaxed clothing and went to the counter. At the counter the guy there asked if I wanted to get on an earlier flight to Chicago. Sure, either I wait in Kalamazoo or I wait in Chicago, neither had internet access so It made no difference to me. The way I figure it the closer I am to my final destination the better. So now I am in the Chicago airport awaiting my 6:00pm flight. I should get home to PVD at 9:15 where Allison will be waiting to pick me up. That is unfortunately the one thing we didn’t plan very well; how I was going to get home from my trip. But it is a good thing for her to learn where the airport is and how to get there for any future passengers she may have to pick up.

On my flight to Chicago I met a pilot who was from Kalamazoo. We talked through the flight and it was enjoyable. You know my rule by now, I am pleasant and return greetings but am not an initiator of conversations. Flying time is my reading time. The pilot started the conversation so I kept up my end of it. Today is “Improve Your Handshake Day”. I heard that on the Bob and Tom show this morning.

I’m working through the last 100 pages of Flashback and expect to have it finished before I get home. That means I have two books left to go before I start on the Kathy Reiches series. I have to remember to pick up a bookcase soon to put all of our beach books in while at the Cape. I’ve got some Buffett ones and some Carl Haissen ones, I’ll have to finds some other ones with a fun beach theme.

I caught up on the Multiplex comic strips, now I have to wait every Monday to see a new one. Speaking of Web Comics, don’t forget that on July 8th Wes Molebash will be at Double Midnight Comics signing his new book, a collection of You’ll Have That strips. For the weekend we will be Wes’ personal chauffeurs and entourage. Wes is a cool guy; he didn’t request anything like a bowl of light brown M&Ms or anything, because, you know, I would have had to go back to 1985 to get some. If you are in the Manchester area please come and stop by the store, buy a book and get it signed by Wes.

7:55pm (My flight ended up being delayed by alot): This has to have been one of the most whacked out flights I have ever taken. Not because it took off and arrived hours late, not because we sat on the tarmac forever, but rather it was the people.

There was a woman two rows ahead of me with a SARS mask on. Her husband was seated behind her and he downed a couple of bottles of wine, and their kids sat in the row across from the mother. The kids were, as my mom would have described them, 'Noodges' (pronounce the nood like the word hood or good, which these kids were not). In between attempts to drink away his cares the father would get up say something menacing to the kids to get them to behave and then sit back down. A couple of times he would reach across the aisle and smack the back of the seat. While his kids may have been used to this behavior, I don't think the same can be said of the people seated behind the children.

This must have scared the crap out of the little old man and his wife who were seated behind the kids and in front of me. Had I been seated there I would have jumped a bit and probably been forced to say something or at least give this guy a look of disapproval. I mean come on, what are you doing?

I find that in an enclosed space with 30 to 40 strangers it is best to adopt an air of civility to some and relative indifference to other fellow passengers. I ignore the crying babies, the newspaper readers who thrust themselves into my meager space and I can even deal with the recliners. It is when someone completely breaks from the norm that you have no choice to take notice and if it directly effects you, to react. I'll help someone struggling to lift a heavy bag, but I'll be impatient with my self important businessman who has already put both of his carry ons in the overhead (incorrectly to boot) and is taking his sweet time to put his suit coat up as well. We get it, you are important and the rules of common courtesy and good behavior do not apply to you, bravo! (which translated into my words means go choke on an olive at your next 3 martini lunch.)

Now SARS woman and the wine aficionado and their delinquent kids weren't the only odd travelers. Nope, there was a lady in the back who had about four kids under the age of six including a newborn. Something she was doing was against the almighty FAA regulations and she and the flight attendant had words, the last of which from the flight attendant were, "I don't care what you do." This was followed by the flight attendant walking back to the front of the plane as the woman in back raised her voice so everyone could hear and jeered at her retreating back, "I see some free tickets coming my way." And then she went on to make some demeaning comments about the 'stewardess'.

Another employee of the airlines went down to talk to the woman and explain the situation and the FAA rules. The woman in the back demanded the name of our flight attendant and a number she could call to complain about her.

Two things I observed from this. The flight attendant should not have lost her cool with this woman, this woman is the type who feels entitled to being treated as the queen of Sheba and will bitch and complain to anyone who will listen to her woes (believe me, I know a few and can easily spot them.) The second thing was the actions of the woman in the back of the plane. Relax lady, you are not that important and you need to follow the rules like everyone else. Nobody wants to sit on the tarmac in uncomfortable silence listening to you drone on like a jackass about the way you have been wronged. We'll sit in uncomfortable silence waiting to take off over an hour and a half late without your shrill harpy tones cutting the stale recycled air, thank you very much. Don't add to the discomfort by being a complete loudmouth jerk.

I did manage to finish Flashback, one of the best Nevada Barr books so far. A dual tale of historical fiction and modern day fiction. The jumping back and forth chapter to chapter kept me deeply engrossed in the action. This may be a frustrating style for some readers but I think it enhanced my enjoyment overall. Barr's characters are so distinct and imaginative, not as wacky as Carl Haissen's but pretty out there.

The kite is in the front closet of the plane, I hope it does not get crushed. This flight attendant asked if it could possibly get damaged, I figure the hard plastic case could take a couple of lumps and retain its shape. I hope I am correct in that assumption. I just have to remember not to forget it when I get off the plane.

The plane finaly landed at 11:00pm. We got home at 12:00 midnight. Up at 5:45 to start the day. I am tired. Thanks again for picking me up last night Allison. Oh, and the kite is perfectly fine. So look for pictures and video next week. Some bonus Pictures.

That is one big kite.

The water tower in Three Rivers, there was some cool lightening around but I couldn't capture any.

I'm in Kalamazoo, MI. My first time in the state, I haven't had much time to check it out and I won't. I've got a demo tomorrow and return home right afterwards.

Today Charles dropped me at the Harrisburg airport. A good airport in my opinion because they have the key feature, Free Wireless Internet. I was scheduled for a 4:41pm flight because of the demonstration I was suppose to have today that got cancelled. Luckily Elise and Charles were very gracious to keep us over another whole day and night. I really appreciated that guys. I ended up getting on a standby flight at 11:30am to get to Chicago. Once in Chicago my luck held out again and I got an early flight to Kalamazoo.

I went to get some dinner at Taco Bell (I can't help it anymore when I see one on the road I get a meal. Allison should not have introduced me to it.) I then went to a Meijer's to get some bottled water, mixed nuts and some grapes. I have a little kitchen and 2 bedrooms at my hotel and I am taking advantage of the amenities. It is too bad that I didn't get to stay at Residence Inns while in Implementation, it would have been nice to have an apartment like place to stay in while I was in one place for a week at a time. It seems like a waste to me for only one night. Oh well.

My flights were uneventful and I slept thought most of them. I also read more of Flashback. In between flights I checked in with Allison and her progress towards home. It ended up that we both arrived at our destinations at the same time. Allison made it through seven of the Eragon CD's.

I got a comment from Wes suggesting a web comic to read called Ugly Hill. I will check it out and add it to the webtainment links. I also found a couple of other webcomics to check out including Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal which is twisted humor, Evil Inc. which is a evil corporate empire staffed with super villains, Geeks World about some geeks who create a software company. And another one called Multiplex about movies and in strip #8 that was not me. However #11 happens to me all the dang time, minus the cuddling. I like this one, pretty funny especially for movie buffs.

Superman Returns 1st Trailer in Lego

A pretty good effort. I wonder if lego is going to do superman along with batman and spiderman. I checked the site and didn't see anything. That would be a cool set of lego toys, Batman, Superman and Spiderman. I like it. YouTube - Superman Returns 1st Trailer in Lego

This past wekend I saw the Batman Handbook. It tells you how to do everything like Batman. Funny read.

Allison has been reading this and getting the scoop on what is cool out there, then she passes it on to me. I figure I would pass it along to you. Since Allison and I talked about renaming the blog: "Drew's blog about him and Allison." I don't know I think she has time enough to hit the blog this button on the google taskbar and share cool stuff with everyone. She's a funny woman and can write some very entertaining stuff. Hon you shouldn't limit yourself to just correcting my grammar silently behind the scenes. Anyway, here is USATODAY.com - Pop Candy

Photo-A-Day #444 06/26/06

Today Allison and I went with Elise to their alma mater, Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. We drove up in the morning, went to the bookstore, bought some SU stuff and then said hello to some of their friends who now work at the college. We then went to Front Street Station to have lunch. They have some really good buffalo wings there. Allison and I split that and a medium cheesesteak sandwich. The wings were similar to the Saint A's wings from back when I spent many nights at the pub.

After lunch we stopped at a few shops and the Susquehanna Trading Post.

Elise took today's photo. I thought it was a really nice one of Allison and I so that is why it gets the top billing. I took a bunch of other pictures but these three below were blogworthy.

Weeding out the webcomics

Time to do another housecleaning on the webcomics. This time I am tossing out Make with the Funny. It hasn't updated since April and was inconsistent before that.

Make with the Funny

Starslip/Starship Crisis. I try but cannot follow this, it is not funny and a real waste of my time.

StarSlip Crisis

The Mows, just not funny anymore.

The Mows

I haven't found any other ones that I enjoy reading except for one called Candi about a art student who would rather draw cartoons and comics than what her professor calls "art".

Candi

A couple of the ones I read daily are having little hiatuses. Girls with Slingshots and Crap I drew on my Lunch Break and Life On Pause fall into that category.

Anybody out there reading a decent webcomic that has a good archive of content?

Photo-A-Day #443 06/25/06

I have two photos with groups of people in them that are bonus pictures from today. Since I couldn't decide between the lunch and dinner photos of the groups of fellow diners I choose a picture of my tasty lunch at Isaac's Deli today. Isaac's is a great little deli in and around PA that has a funky theme. Each of the sandwiches are named for birds. The mascot is a pink flamingo and they use Pretzel Rolls. Great big soft pretzels baked as rolls for your sandwich. Fantastic. I got the Texas Wren. Don't think that if your favorite sandwich is not on the Pretzel Roll page that it means you can't get it on a pretzel roll, no sir. You can get any sandwich on the pretzel roll, it is up to you.

We went to Issac's with Elise and Charles and Elise's sister Amy. Amy just got back from camp and she had a great time. We are looking forward to our next vacation up to Elise's parent's place in Maine when we can see Amy again. We had a great meal and a great afternoon. Here's Bonus Photo #1.

Charles, Elise, Amy, and Allison

After we dropped Amy back with Elise's parent's we went back to Elise and Charles' place, I caught a quick nap before Justin and Vicki arrived at the house. We were going to go mini golfing or something out of doors but it was pouring so we opted for dinner and a movie. For dinner we went to Gullifty's for dinner and it was really tasty. They had a huge selection of meals and they had great fruit flavored lemonades and Iced Teas. I'm a huge lemonade fan myself and 9 times out of 10 I choose it as my dining drink. I did have a Lager Lite and then switched to Strawberry Lemonade. Such a good strawberry lemonade, not as good as the ones I had in Oregon at a place I can't remember the name of. I need to go back there again and have another meal. Someday I'll get back to Ashland, OR.

After dinner we went to the West Shore Theatre, a second run theater where movies are $3.00 each and they have a reasonable snack bar too. It is a good historical theatre and I hope the doors stay open. We lost the zeotrope in Franklin, MA and that was a big loss to history as well as small independent theatres in America. If there is a small independent theatre near you, go support it. We ended up seeing The Break-Up. I liked it, I liked it for many reasons, 1. Peter Billingsley is all grown up and producing and acted in this movie, 2. Vince Vaughn's delivery of lines, and 3. The ending, which I won't give away but it was good and realistic. Elise did not like the ending.

It was very nice to see Vicki and Justin and get to talk. We found out that Charles, Justin and myself are all very in tune with the finances of our households, to a similarly scary degree.

Here is bonus Photo #2.

Cook Out in PA

Last night Allison and I were at Elise and Charles' for a cook out with some of Allison's college friends. Emily arrived first and was soon followed by Jen and her son Brett. Brett was a little cutie, with a set of lungs on him. He's 3 or 4 months old, very new and all. We missed seeing Ben (Jen's husband and Brett's dad), and hope to see him on another trip down the road. Then Erin and Rob came. Erin and Rob are fellow bloggers, Rob has had his blog for a very long time. Each time he changes it he gives it another number, he's up to #7 now.

The girls had fun taking turns holding Brett and trying to get him to stop crying, Charles and I were pretty good at making him smile. Brett has the funkiest hair, Not one of my pictures really captured it very well. But his hair stands straight up and is very long.

We had a great meal with tons of food, shish-k-bobs with beef or chicken, mushrooms, zucchini, potatoes, and eggplant. I was a fan of all but the eggplant, I just don't like it and never mind the fact that for much of my childhood I thought it was a plant that was similar to a cadbury egg. I thought that if an eggplant was cut open it would be like a hard boiled egg inside. I don't know why I thought this but I did. And that has been a mental block on my enjoyment of the vegetable.

For dessert we had an ice cream cake and Nacho Mama's S'mores. The ice cream cake was picked up as a congratulations for Erin and Rob's engagement. We got the supermarket to write Congrad Erin and Rob, not intentionally mind you. We wanted it to say congrats but, and we should have checked, the woman in the bakery apparently could not spell correctly. So back at the house Allison and Elise tried to make the D into a T. I found it funny that she only wrote Congrad and not Congrads.

Nacho Mama's S'mores is a dessert that I've been dying to make ever since I saw Ham on the Street on the food network where George Duran made these in a cast iron skillet on the campfire. The idea is that you can make a plate of smores that eats like a plate of nachos, it gets everyone excited and involved in sharing the dessert. I know that you purists out there may not like Nacho Mama's S'mores because it takes the fun out of roasting the marshmallows, but it is fun to make and fun to eat. Here is the recipe. (from the Food Network Site: Original Page)

Nacho Mama's S'mores Recipe
courtesy George Duran

Show: Ham on the Street
Episode: The Great Outdoors

Recipe Summary
Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 12 minutes
Yield: 6 to 8 servings

1 (14-ounce) package graham crackers
6 milk chocolate bars (recommended: Hershey's)
1/2 (10.5-ounce) bag mini marshmallows

Break the graham crackers into pieces and place a layer in the bottom of a cast iron skillet. Break up the chocolate bars and put a layer on top of the crackers. Now add another layer of crackers and chocolate. Evenly distribute the marshmallows over it all. Place the skillet in a corner of the campfire, rotating the pan 1/4 turn every 3 minutes, until the chocolate is melted and the marshmallow are golden brown, about 12 minutes. Be sure to protect your hands from the fire at all times.

Alternately, the S'mores can be made in a pie pan in a preheated 250 degree F oven until the chocolate and marshmallows melt.

After the Nacho Mama's S'mores I fell into a S'mores coma and had a good night's sleep. I did however; manage to get some pictures before the coma.

Jen and Brett

I love Brett's expression, he got distracted by the flash and stopped crying. I didn't want to give the poor kid a seizure so I had to stop taking pictures.

Photo-A-Day #442 06/24/06

Today Allison and I went with Elise and Charles to the York, PA Harley Davidson Vehicle Operations Plant for a tour. They are in their busy production period, creating the 2007 bikes so we could not see the actual assembly line because dealers get to see the 2007's first. Today's photo was taken by the guy at the door who hands out the tickets to the tour. The photo on the top of the page was taken by Elise. You could not bring a camera into the plant but in the tour building you could and you could also sit on all the display bikes. We each picked one or two and gave them a try. Then we spent some time at the giftshop picking up some stuff. Hats and shirts and of course, pins.

After the tour and shopping we went down the road to Laugerman's Harley-Davidson. They had their own museum with their own family collection, some great stuff. I am surprised that their pin was a very lame one. Oh well.

After that we had lunch at the 83 diner. A good meal. Some strong lemonade though. I cut it with water twice and it was still strong. Here are some additional pictures from the day.

Feasting on Asphalt

One of my heroes, Alton Brown has a new special on the Food Network called Feasting on Asphalt. It is a series of four episodes where Brown and his crew take to the open road upon their motorcycles, (Glad you finally got one Alton - we talked about motorcycles back when Allison and I met him in 2003 at a book signing for his book Gear for My Kitchen)

Here is what the Food network has to say about the show.
Feasting on Asphalt

Get your motor running! Eat out on the highway!

Helmet snug and biker chains dangling, the inimitable Alton Brown is Feasting on Asphalt --a (working) title only he could dream up. Atop his motorcycle, Alton sets out on Route 66 to experience the most colorful cuisine that storied highway has to offer. From secret hamburger hideaways to delicious truck stop diners, he reveals the heartland havens that make up the culinary heritage of America.

This show should be fantastic and for many reasons. First of all it combines two things I love, motorcycles and food. The road trip through back roads to find those places that are not part of some corporate chain is so much fun. Whenever I travel to places I try and find something that is not a major chain, most often I am not disappointed in my meal. Not for nothing, but I had thought that a show that featured a group of riders going from place to place and dining on regional foods along the way would be a fantastic idea for a show. I am glad that Alton Brown has made this a reality. Not a reality show, those are awful.

The show called Feasting on Asphalt is set to premiere on July 29th. Here is the rest of the schedule.

Episode I premieres on Food Network Saturday, July 29, 2006 at 9 PM ET/PT
Episode II - Aug 5
Episode III Aug 12
Episode IV Aug 19
All episodes air at 9 PM ET/PT

During the filming of the show Alton had an accident and broke his clavicle. He is okay but wounded. Be careful Alton, I certainly want you around for many years to come, you're about the best thing about cooking there is out there.

Here are some articles about the show. I hope you watch it, it should be great.

This is Jake. Jake is Elise and Charles' dog. He is such a cutie. Jake is so full of energy and fun. Elise and Jake play with bubbles (animal friendly ones) Jake has a great time catching them in the air or stomping them out on the rug. I got a bunch of photos while he played.

Get it Jakey!

Take the Picture Quick, this is the most still I've been all day.

So Many Bubbles. What to Do? What to Do?

More Please!

You Looking at Me!

Jake loves them bubbles.

So today Allison and I drove to PA. The Pike to 84 to 81 and here we are. We made a couple of stops but we made it by 3:00pm. We listed to three CD's from Eragon and it was good to go back and re-listen to the start of this series. Some things I picked up on more the second time around. We played, stop after every chapter to sort out the myriad of details. We played this game less and less as the day went on as Allison was picking up the story very quickly.

We had lunch at Marvelous Mugs and the meal was a very good one. Now we are at Elise and Charles' house and are getting ready for dinner. Tomorrow we get up early for a trip to York to go to the Harley Davidson Factory for a tour. No camera's are allowed inside so I'll only get to take pictures in the tour center, bummer.

If you do not want to read about a terrible story of animal cruelty and my thoughts on it, stop reading now.

If you are an animal lover and live in Massachusetts you may have seen the very disturbing story that aired this morning on the news. I heard it this morning as we said goodbye to my parents. It was a story about a small dog that was viciously murdered by some sick individual who impaled the dog on an iron fence. I felt sick and the feeling stuck with me most of the ride to PA. (I guess that is why I wanted Jake to be today's Photo-A-Day, he's such a loving pet and so full of life.) How could anyone do that to a dog? Apparently the dog was taken on April 17th from the backyard of the owner and this past Tuesday some sick bastard picked up the 13lb miniature Pinscher above their head and slammed it down on the spikes of a wrought iron fence in Roxbury. How can someone do this sort of thing? I understand that people do much worse things to other people and that in perspective that this was a dog. I'm not going to argue the importance or value of one over the other, although some pets I like way more than some people. This sort of story will haunt me for a long time.

It is like the story where in a fit of 'Road Rage' some bastard got out of his car after a fender bender with a woman, reached into her car and pulled out her Bichon Frise and hurled it into oncoming traffic, got in his car and drove away. That story still sticks with me as an horrific, sick and evil act. I did a search on the story about the Bichon Frise - Leo. The guy who killed Leo got the maximum sentence for his crime, Three Years! Not near long enough in my opinion. That was in 2001, he's out now.

Massachusetts is a state where animal cruelty can get you a five year jail sentence. I certainly hope that they capture the scumbag in Roxbury who killed the miniature Pinscher and toss his craven ass in jail. There's more I want to say about what I want to happen to this loser this but it is not fit to print.

Sick, depraved, weak and despicable, there are no words evil enough to describe these actions. To take an innocent, helpless, dependent life and snuff it out without so much as a thought is detestable.

Photo-A-Day #440 06/22/06

Here is Oliver; he has found refuge from the heat by lying among Allison’s bags and stuffed animals. His latest perch has been on the plastic bin tower that we have in the bedroom because of the lack of space. Hopefully we will get that taken care of in the next few months.

So today I found out that this blog is a favorite blog of MisterNashville.com. Eddie Christy runs MisterNashville.com and he is also a featured blogger for Metro Blogging Nashville. Eddie faithfully reads daily and comments almost daily on this blog. He leaves Kudos on almost every post. Sometimes he’s so quick I haven’t even gotten a chance to make any last minute edits before he’s posted a message. That is so great! Check out Eddie’s music and blogging skills on MySpace as well as at MisterNashville.com and http://nashville.metblogs.com/. Eddie you should grab the Photo-A-Day display box code to add to MisterNashville.com, it can be found here.

Tomorrow Allison and I head down to PA for a fun weekend to stay with Elise and Charles and visit with a few more of Allison’s friends. I found out today that I’m going to need to take an extra vacation day for this trip. You see the fates decreed that the planets would align and I would be in PA around Harrisburg at the same time when I had a demo there. So we would drive down to PA, spend the weekend and part of Monday with Elise and Charles then Allison would drop me at the airport to pick up a car so I could go to my hotel room for Monday night. Then on Tuesday Allison would drive home, I would do my demo and catch a flight to Kalamazoo MI (Yep I’m actually going to Kalamazoo… jealous?) do a demo in Kalamazoo on Wednesday and fly home. But the Harrisburg demo cancelled so we’ll be imposing on Elise and Charles’ hospitality one more night and get another day down in PA. But now I have to get to the Harrisburg airport early to try and get on standby for some earlier flights. Changing my flights this close to the demo date would have been too much money. So I may get to know the Harrisburg Airport really well or I may have more time in Kalamazoo. That is my life on the road.

Speaking of life on the road or rather what takes us places along the road... our cars. A double whammy is hitting us in the next few weeks. First whammy is Allison's car, we dropped it off for service so it would be ready for our trip this weekend and we got the added bonus of having to by some rear brakes, they were worn down to 10%, not 10% worn but 10% left. Yeah, lets take care of that. Why are we not taking my car to PA, it gets at least 2 miles more a gallon? That would be whammy #2, Air conditioner in my car is busted and I need to get it repaired. Found out that it's going to cost money to find out what needs to be repaired before I pay additional money to actually have it repaired. They have to determine if it is leaking. I told them, yes it is leaking, can I have the $225.00 it is going to cost to determine that applied to the cost it will be to repair it? Let's just put it this way. Service departments have no sense of humor.

Okay I've told you that I've been working with Blue Cross Blue shield with their program called Fit Blue. Well I've added an online tool to my (going very slowly) slim down. That would be the USDA's site called My Pyramid.gov with it the new food pyramid can be personalized to my weight as well as my weight loss. I set it up today, it is a pretty fun site.

Photo-A-Day #439 06/21/06

Today I drove home from Syracuse. To prevent falling asleep on the ride I stopped at many rest areas. I made sure to hydrate at each one or every other one. It was good to get out and move around every 30 to 50 miles or so. While I was in one of the rest stops I saw this sculpture. Beginning to feel like a tourist myself all over the country visiting rest stops I decided to take this picture.

When I got home I picked up a new supply of Bumble Bars for Allison and I on our trip to PA this weekend. I also ran to WildTime Comics to pick up my subscription. I got The Transformers Art of War #2 and G.I. Joe #12, and G.I. Joe Declassified #1. I also got Astonishing X-Men #15. I am missing #9 in that series and have yet to read a single book. I want to be able to read the whole story all the way through.

I was able to see Last Comic Standing because Allison taped it for me. I like Gabriel’s strategy, very fair and yet very smart, don’t make enemies this early in the game. Also he is a great talent and will be tough to beat in the competition. I’m glad that Stella didn’t make it to the next round but can’t believe that Michelle was funny enough to beat April.

And we watched Rescue Me. That show still manages to make me laugh, be shocked, disgusted and interested all at the same time.

I am now almost halfway through Eldest on CD. I’ve done 9 of the 20 CD’s. The author, Christopher Paolini is so amazing, the characters, the story, the epic scale of the adventure, it is so much fun to listen to and he is only 23, such talent at such a young age. How he can think of the detail and the subplots and the distinct characters, is just incredible to me. There is still no trailer for Eragon the movie yet, and I just learned that it was supposed to have been with Superman Returns but it is not. However I did hear that the Transformers teaser trailer would begin being shown on July 7th with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Mike Birbiglia

NBC in New York has the Yankees on TV rather than Last Comic Standing. What a waste of airtime. So instead I am checking out a great comic called Mike Birbiglia. This guy is so funny. YouTube - Mike Birbiglia on Comedy central's USO tour: ""

Today’s photo is lame, it sucks… I admit it. I spent the entire day from 8:45am to 5:00pm talking, demonstrating and answering questions. I left the demo barely functional enough to remember my own name let alone how to get back to the hotel. Once back at the hotel I had no desire to leave. This picture is of the artwork that graces many the Courtyard Marriott rooms. I took this picture because a.) I love artwork in hotels, b.) I love flowers and the color yellow, or c.) With this picture I could say something lame like ‘Hey, I bet Allison stayed in a Courtyard Marriott and that is what gave her the idea for the yellow picket fence headboard.’, and I don’t even have to go back outside. I went with option C. The only cool part of this is that I took the picture in the mirror behind the bathroom door so that the flash wouldn’t show as a bright spot on the glass of the picture and neither would my reflection. Now, if I could have used that for something less lame.

Allison sent me this picture today of Oliver. It was a nice wake up message that she sent on the camera phone. Speaking of camera phones, I forgot my portable card reader so I thought I couldn’t upload my Photo-A-Day from yesterday or today but then realized I could take my SD memory card from my camera, put it in my Treo and beam the image to the laptop, it takes about 5 minutes to beam a 1.8MB image but it is better than nothing (Although with the uninspired images from today and yesterday I guess it really wasn’t worth the 5 minute beamings.) Better pictures will be coming; I will get something good tomorrow on my ride home.

I started reading the next Nevada Barr book in the series, It is called Flashback, Law Enforcement Ranger Anna Pigeon is in the Dry Tortugas off of Florida in an old Fort that is now a National Park. This book is a little different in that each chapter is either present day or a Flashback through the device of old letters from a family member of Anna’s. So when I finished a cliffhanger on the previous chapter I thought I’d dive right into the action but ended up back in the 1800’s. It was a bit frustrating but I liked it in a way. I am eager to read more. Allison is on book three of the series called Ill Wind. I’m glad she is enjoying the books so much. It is tough reading a series so far apart from each other because if one of us has read a book then we have to be careful not to reveal the plot to the other. Also I get questions like, “So and So isn’t the killer because if he is I’m not finishing this book.” To which I must reply by shrugging my shoulders to prevent giving away any part of the story.

Because the picture today is so terrible here is another one from Allison, if she did PAD this would be her photo today.

Photo-A-Day #437 06/19/06

I drove to Syracuse, NY today. It took me about 5 hours. A long ride, got a little tired, spent some time at the rest areas along the way to give myself some little breaks. I listened to 4 of the Eldest CD’s. Allison gave me Eldest (The second book in the Eragon Trilogy) and I hadn’t had a chance yet to begin listening. I figure I can get two fifths of the way through the CD’s on this trip. It is a long story, even longer than Eragon. I think we will begin listening to Eragon on our way to PA. I’ve already heard it but really liked it and figure I’ll introduce Allison to it before the movie comes out this December (December 15th to be exact.)

I’ve been putting it off but I cannot any longer. I have to get my air conditioner fixed. I drove the whole way here with the window down to keep cool and that didn’t really help much. I know that there are folks on the air conditioning vs. window way of cooling off in a car. And folks are very adamant about their sides. I’m on the air conditioner side, especially on the highway, around town maybe the windows down but not that often.

I went and saw Cars today. I loved it. Such a fun movie! If you go, stay to the end, there are some really funny things that happen. You gotta love Pixar, they are so amazing. The cameos were very good too. Not enough of those and way to short for some of them. John Ratzenberger was really funny during the credits. It is worth staying just for that. And for those who are fans of Click and Clack the Tappet brothers on Car Talk on NPR you'll be happy to see them in the movie as well.

Today’s photo is the view I had when I looked at the passenger seat. (Not taken while driving.)

Photo-A-Day #436 06/18/06

Today Allison and I were still at the Cape. We celebrated Father’s Day with a Blueberry pancake breakfast with Dad. After breakfast we put together our new headboard for the room at the Cape. Allison had the idea to use a picket fence as a headboard. We went to see about buying a section of fence from Home Depot last week. I talked to my Dad about it and he suggested that rather than buying a section of fence, we build our own to the size and specifications that we want.

So today Allison got to work with a power drill for the first time ever and she did so well. I would drill a guide hole and then Allison would put a screw in the hole. This is the most solid piece of fence you’ll ever see handing on a wall behind a bed. Dad and I measured it out and laid out all of the pieces. It is totally square and level and a nice piece of woodworking.

Once we finished putting it all together Allison did all the painting. She painted it a bright yellow to match the color of our dresser. Our bedroom at the Cape is coming together, We still have to hang the Radio/CD player and print a few pictures and hang the headboard then it will be done and I will be posting pictures of our colorful flip flop themed room.

We spent much of the rest of the day reading and napping and helping out around the house. On the way home we stopped at a field where there were people flying some of the most elaborate kites I’ve ever seen. That inspired today’s Photo-A-Day.

Photo-A-Day #435 06/17/06

Today Allison and I went to visit my Grandparents in Harwich. We got there early enough to catch one of Grandpa’s softball games. He plays with the Cape Cod Senior League. Also called the Old Timer’s League or maybe it was once called that. Either way he’s been on a team playing so well for many years. He can hit, he can run and he can field. He also did many years of pitching. He’s also been known to take care of some grand slams at some games. This picture is of him coming in to score the first run of the game for his team. We thought we were going to be run out of the place because the team was losing and they have been undefeated so far this year. But not to worry the team came back in the end to win it.

After the game we stopped over to Grandma and Grandpa’s house so Grandpa could get changed so we could go to lunch. We went to lunch at Ocean’s Edge resort in Brewster. My Aunt Cindy works as the concierge there. She showed us around the place and introduced us to the staff. They took good care of us. We went to the pub and Allison and I split a turkey club and each got a cup of chowder. We copied Grandma and Grandpa’s lunch choice. After lunch we saw more of the resort. Aunt Cindy showed us some of the cool places there.

On our way home we saw another one of the whales from the Whale Trail of Cape Cod. It is called Blue Hydrangea, which is in front of the Brewster Bookstore. I caught a shot of it as we passed by. We went back to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house so that Grandpa could catch the game and Allison and Grandma could read and take naps in the sun room. I worked on fixing the things that had become buggy around Grandma’s computer. It is all back to working order now. The computer took a while and Allison found out where I get my trait of wanted to be somewhere on time. Yeah it is genetic.

We went over to my Aunt Cindy and Uncle Wayne’s house for a cook-out. Mom and Dad and Tara came up too and they brought a crock-pot of pulled pork. I had gotten hat started that morning. This time I used a fresh Boston Butt instead of a smoked Picnic cut. This was so much better even Jeff said so. This time I used a shot of Captain Morgan’s Rum in the mixture. I wasn’t able to use the Tabasco ketchup because I forgot it at home (even though I had a list).

The Cookout was a good time. Uncle Wayne got a Tractor Trailer tire rim from a junkyard to use as a fire pit, that worked out great. My cousins roasted their own hot dogs and we made tons of Smores and got to use the toasted coconut marshmallows. They were very tasty. When my cousin asked what the difference between the junkyard and the dump was I explained that the junkyard is like the dump but it has a gift shop. When we hike some of the campsites have a fire pit and most of the time they use a tire rim, and the fire pit of course is the best part of hiking. That is where the group gets warm and shares stories and has a good time. Allison and I had such a good time that we stayed until the fire burned down to embers. We hung out talking with Cindy, Wayne, Erin, Corrine, and Jeff. Such a great time was had that we didn’t get home till close to 1:00am. What a nice day. I took many many pictures.

Today is my parent's anniversary. Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad. Allison and I went down to the cape today after work to have dinner with Mom & Dad. We were going to get them Paul's Pizza but they had that last night. Oh well maybe next time.

Today's photo is some of Dad's patio decorating. He took an old tool belt of his and hung it on the door of the outside shower. Looks pretty good there. The patio and garden are beginning to bloom and look terrific again. Glad we are getting some time to spend down here this summer.

If you haven't watched this show yet, you may want to give it a try. You either have to have BBC America or On Demand from Comcast. Allison and I watched the first episode and it was really a good one. Check out On Demand and catch up. BBC America - Hex

Oliver was perched in the cat condo. He isstaring intently out the window, probably at the cat that looks just like him that has been roaming the neighborhood and giving me a scare every time I see it. The cat looks just like Oliver but is larger when you really look at it, but if I just glance at the cat I think Oliver got out, which is probably one of my biggest worries for the cats at this time. I would lose it if they got out. It is not safe for them out there.

Allison and I tried to get to see the Da Vinci Code tonight but it just wasn't in our timetable. So we caught up on a couple of Smallville episodes. We are just about finished with season one. It has been slow going. I'd like to finish all 4 seasons and pick up season 5 before season 6 starts, then we can watch those episodes as they air on the CW network.

NO LEFT TURN!

A new traffic pattern has been in effect for over six months or so and still every day I see someone making a left turn where there is no longer a left turn lane. I hope the idiot didn't kill someone.

Tonight we watched the second round of semi finals for Last Comic Standing and guess what Gabriel Iglesias was the people's choice and he got in the house!! (or rather on the cruise ship). You may remember that I got to meet Gabriel back in January of 2005. If you don't remember you can go for a refresher. Looking back I also met another competitor named Saleem. I've got a picture with him too. So I am urging everyone to vote for Gabriel Iglesias to win, he's the funniest in the house, on the ship.

Anthony Clark cannot pronounce America. He calls it Americ-er. I find that irritating, but yet less irritating than Jay Mohr.

Allison and I did some rollerblading this afternoon. Good fun. Allison is getting alot more confident on her blades. We'll be out on the canal by summer's end.

Oliver didn't really care about the show. He's more interested in what the ceiling looks like.

Back in the kitchen again. This is my new lunch container. Allison has a mataching one as well. They are called the Mr. Bento Lunch Jar. This thing is great. Each container stacks upon the other and is put into the Mr. Bento Lunch Jar and it keeps food really cold or hot, depending upon how you store it. We used it for the first time today. Tonight we grilled a bunch of chicken breast for lunches and some steak tips for dinner. With all the grilling I do I've got to get myself one of these, the Grillslinger.

Photo-A-Day #428 06/10/06

Okay, two days in a row where the Photo-A-Day didn't go up till the next day. I'm easing up on the self imposed rules, they still nag at me but I'm working on it.

Last evening was my 10 year College Reunion. The way that my college does reunions is that every class that either has their 5, 10,15, etc... Reunion all come to the college for Reunion Weekend. I've been to about 6 or 7 of them in my lifetime. I volunteered at some, I had my 5 year, and when I worked at the college I went each year as a college representative.

I worked at the college from 1997 - 2001 and so I was there the whole four years with the folks from the class of 2001 (It was their 5 year reunion). I was even the class advisor for that time. So on more than one occasion last night I had some people from the class of 2001 ask if I still worked at the college. Nope, I had moved on when they had. It was great to see people though. Many of the 2001 alumni were good friends of mine, they worked as my RA's and we spent time together. It was really nice to see them.

It was also very nice to see the people from the class of 1996. I spent quite a bit of time talking to some folks with whom I hadn't talked with much in college. There were a bunch of people I didn't even get a chance to talk with and there were some folks whom I really wanted to see and were so glad that they came and we got to talk and reminisce. Then there were folks whom I really hoped would have come but didn't. But it was really great to reconnect with some important friends. And it was really nice that they got along well with Allison.

Allison even had a good time meeting some of my former students. I was able to show her that they all didn't hate me for being a mean RD. That is Residence Hall Director, of which I was one for 4 years. A couple of students came up and told Allison that I had kept them from dying, getting in trouble and generally making an ass out of themselves. I said, "See hon, not every one of them thought I was personally out to get them." I have to say that overall I was a pretty laid back RD. I miss that job sometimes, not the 2:00am nights with drunken morons but being there for my students was important. The free room and board didn't hurt either.

It was nice to see the people I worked with when I was a staff member of the college, it was nice to see everyone. I liked college, I liked the people who went there and I was very happy to have gone. However, next time we are skipping the dinner and heading just to the tent. This was the first time I had paid for a reunion weekend ever and although it was nice to do the dinner, the meal wasn't worth the price of admission.

Ken and Alicia came over to the tent, He's a '95 and she's a '99. We got to talk with them for a bit and Alicia showed Allison around some of the dorms. Here is a bonus picture of Ken. He doesn't come to this blog so he won't see it. There was a fiesta theme to the tent this year.

Don White show Recap

Last night Allison and I went with Neil and Andrea to see Don White perform at the Jimmy Tingle Off Broadway Theatre in Davis Square. Jimmy Tingle is one funny guy. I had never seen him before but had heard of him. I would certainly like to see another show at the theatre. It was great, we parked at Alewife, caught the T and we got there walked around Davis Square and when we went to pick up our tickets we caught up with Neil and Andrea. We had dinner and got back to the theatre about an hour early and sat at a table that was practically onstage. I was three feet from Lawren when he came out and played with his Dad. That is how close I was.

We started the evening off by going to the BBQ restaurant Red Bones. Red Bones was a pretty tasty place. We got our tickets so that we could get a discount on dinner and as a group we ordered the easy dinner for 4. It had ribs, pulled pork (like Allison wanted any more pulled pork this month let alone this week, yes next time we make it we will have more people over to share in the meal), a half chicken plus big bowls of beans and coleslaw. We ordered a round of hush puppies as an appetizer and I have to say they were just ... eh. I mean they in no way rivaled the hush puppies at the Outlaw BBQ in Foxboro, the standard by which I measure all hush puppies. But they were okay. Dinner overall was a good meal in an interesting place. The downstairs was decorated for a black light party and had some interesting art on the walls. One picture looked like a demonic Scooby Doo and Shaggy as kids. It was ...... Interesting.

The Jimmy Tingle Off Broadway Theatre was a fun time. We got there early, got the good seats and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Jimmy Tingle came out first and warmed up the crowd. That was so much fun, he had us rolling. His humor is on the political vent but I still enjoyed it and could laugh alot. After Jimmy Tingle was done we had a brief intermission and then Don White came on for his first set. Don White was filming a DVD and more than likely we will be in it because of our seats, which is pretty cool. He did alot of the stuff we had seen before, I find it funny but I am not at the point of laughing out loud anymore. So maybe I won't be on the DVD. Don White did alot of his standards and he has a fairly new bit about the Red Sox winning the World Series that is a riot. I keep wondering when this book he is writing is ever going to come out, I've been hearing the one same story over and over at each show. Each time it is further embellished but in essence the same story. Don you gotta give us another story from the book, they are great stories, let's get this thing published. I really want to read it.

Don's family was there including his often talked about Daughter and Wife. His son Lawren was there too with his new wife, he must be coming up on his 1 year anniversary sometime this month if it hasn't come up already. Lawren did his Winnie the Pooh song, which I always enjoy. Don did the Brown Eyes Shine song after the story about the Weaky, weaky, weaky wheels. If you haven't heard that story it is worth buying his Live in Michigan CD for that alone. But what I really enjoyed about Brown Eyes Shine this time was that he didn't do that pounding on his chest thing when he sang some of the more poignant parts. I don't know, I find that distracting, he's got a great voice, I never found that chest reverb thing to enhance it by much.

After the show we went to get some ice cream at JP Licks there in Davis Square. They have some great ice cream and make some awesome ice cream cakes. I got the Negative Chip Ice cream and it was fantastic. I love Chocolate Ice cream with white chocolate chips. I don't like white chocolate in any other venue but coupled with chocolate ice cream it is great.

Then we drove up to New Hampshire in the pouring rain to stay over night because Today is my 10 year College Reunion. We are going to head over to Saint A's sometime around 5 or 7, I haven't decided yet.

Yesterday was also an important date because 1, it was my Father's birthday. And 2. it was 5 years ago that Allison and I got together. At my 5 year college reunion.

A further explaination is forthcoming but for now I'm getting some more sleep. And because the image is a day late there will be a bonus picture.) Came home from the sunny hot weather of Missouri to rain, rain and more rain. This shot I took while atking a walk tonight with Allison. It is of a little brook that overflowed its banks this past week. We could hear the water rushing along throughout our entire walk.

Sat next to the worls most fidgety kid on my flight home. They moved him and his parent's from the exit row to my row because he was under 15. Instead they put an 85 year old woman to take charge of the door. I felt safe.

I was in St. Louis today. After my demonstration in Mexico, MO I drove to St. Louis and then to the downtown where I walked around and took in the sights. I was walking by this park and had to take this picture because of how layered everything was. There was the park, the official looking building with the copper roof and then the arch. Almost all of my pictures look like the Arch is fake. It was such a bright blue sky and somehow the arch looks like it was dropped into the image.

In this park area there was some photo shoot going on with 4 women in bikinis and about 15 people on a camera crew. I'm not sure what they were making a video for but you can kind of make out the crew on the right side.

I did visit the arch park but did not ride up on the tram. I am not a big fan of heights and it just didn't appeal to me. Making my way over to the park I had to cross streets that went over the highway, the guard rails are at hip height, You get some folks fooling around in that area and someone is going over that railing. I was freaked out when a big semi came by, I had this irrational fear that as the truck whipped under the overpass somehow a suction would cause me to be pulled off of the overpass. It is kinda freaky to be that close to a truck barreling its way down the highway.

I got some more pictures from my day in St. Louis and will post them to my flickr account. For some reason Buzznet changes the word Flikr to a another word that is not suitable for posting. Petty, very petty.

Here's the link to the Flickr pictures.

Hanging in Columbia, MO

My demo today was super short and so I had the rest of the day to enjoy the area. I took some advice from my friend Ryan who has family here to check out Shakespeare's Pizza. That was some good pizza. I did not find a Toy's R Us but did manage to find all but three of the the Car's die cast toys including Lizzie the very hard to find model T type car. If you can't tell I am very excited about this movie. I have loved the Disney Pixar Stuff so much and this one and the Incredibles will probably be my favorites.

This week I have a Jeep Liberty to tool around in. I also have Sirus Satellite Radio. And I have had the tuner set to channel 103 which is Blue Collar Radio featuring comedy bits from the Blue Collar guys as well as other comedians. Some funny stuff.

I also found this fun interactive poster of the movie Cars. Interactive Cars Poster

Photo-A-Day #424 06/06/06

I stopped into this store, it was something like Nostalgiaville or something. They had everything from I love Lucy, Peanuts, Elvis, Old Movies, Penny candy for 25 cents. They even had Balsa Wood planes. Remember those, good for one or two flights till you wound the propeller to a double knot and it broke, and yet only went about 2 feet further than the proper wind.

My sisters and I used to work at a candy store on the cape. Each Sunday we would get up early and stuff the inserts and ads and comics into the Sunday paper. After we were done we would sometimes get $5.00 but most often we got a bag of candy. I'm not talking crappy candy either. We would get boxes of Nerds, Rinky Dinks (Made by Willy Wonka but are no longer in existence, think small gobstoppers that were sour and came in Lime, Orange, Cherry Strawberry, Lemon and Grape, my favorite candies ever by the way.) We even got to run the register and other stuff. That candy store and the adjoining Ice Cream shop is long gone now, torn down and made into a 1.5 million a condo complex. Great memories from those days working for candy.

Mater and Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars. I found a few more of the die cast cars out here in Columbia, MO at a Wal-Mart. I'll try and hit a few more to fill up the Cars carrying case I picked up yesterday. Hopefully I can find another Toys R' US and get another movie ticket.

Broke my pedometer today on the flight from Providence to Pittsburgh. I forgot it was on my hip when I got on the plane and it snapped off when I got up at the end of the flight. The plastic hook for the belt is bent at a funny angle and can not be glued back together to the pedometer itself. I saw some pedometers at Target on clearance so I'll have to pick one up back at home.

Saw a sign today for a Testicle Festival. I wasn't in a place I could stop to catch that picture. I guess it is an annual event here in in this part of Missouri. It happened this past weekend.

I started reading Hunting Season today. Looks like this will be another good one.

Today Allison spent the day with the girls shopping at Wrentham Village and then seeing the movie The Break-Up, she liked it and thought it was funny. I spent the day doing the guy thing. I played some video games, went and got my comic books, picked up Nevada Barr's Hunting Season and Firestorm and Carl Hiaassen's Sick Puppy at Borders, I got the Complete Series of Keen Eddie at Newbury comics and I picked up two sets of Cars toys, the Ramone and Flo set and the Luigi, Guido and Tractor set. I've decided to pick up the die cast metal Cars toys and the race track carrying case to save for those future kids. It has a space for each of the different characters.

I also watched The Ultimate Avengers movie that I borrowed from Ryan. The second movie, The Ultimate Avengers 2 comes out next month.

Ryan and Amy and their son came over tonight for dinner. I made pulled pork in the crock pot, it was delicious. After dinner I drew a picture for their son and took a picture of the toys on the table. Most of them are mine. But I am good at sharing.

The pedometer says 6392 on it, did some walking around going store to store and the mall.

Photo-A-Day #420 06/02/06

Caught this flower this morning on the way to work. All the wet weather is pretty neat on the flowers.

Late night tonight, Andy and Rondi came over for dinner and the four of us watched The Incredibles. That is a fun movie. We all enjoyed it very much.

I was introduced to a great snack today. It is called the Bumble Bar. It is full of seasame seeds, and whatnot and is gluten free, very tasty.

Pedometer shows 4136 steps.

Photo-A-Day #419 06/01/06

Went for a walk with my sister Tara today. I liked how this house had their lawn landscaped. My pedometer count is 5795, a little better than yesterday but low because I worked from home so not as much walking around the house.

Today is my grandmother's birthday. Happy Birthday Grandma B.
